Quirky bars in Leicester
Leicester is no stranger to the weird and the wonderful. A city full of vintage clothing, abounding independent shops and quirky bars around many of its street corners, but which bars are you yet to visit? Here are just a few unmissable alcohol-pit-stops you should make whilst in lively Leicester.
This new and rather strange bar situated on Hotel St will leave you feeling a little uneasy – and that’s not just from the alcohol. The bar’s mystic and dark character, variety of spirits and cocktails, as well as some rather complicated and bizarre menu quotes make it unlike any other bar in Leicester. With 26 affordable and different cocktails on the menu, some quite ghoulish, and a watering hole of wine, prosecco and champagne, the bar may be your only pit-stop for the evening. Amongst all the spirits and commotion upstairs, below your feet lies the Escape Asylum rooms named RIIITUAL and PHOBIA, which means an anguishing entrance for those upstairs would be nothing but fitting. If you are somewhat an acrophobic, I wouldn’t look below as you enter. A glass floor drop reels your eyes downwards to be greeted with human bone remains…Can you get much stranger? I think not.
Fasten your seatbelts…this somewhat secret bar and nightclub just off Belvoir street will have your night flying high. This unique airplane styled bar is unlike any bar in Leicester. It is recognisable by its small yellow departures sign on the street entrance, so small you may have never noticed it before. Perfect for the 9-5 workers or students who long await the weekend for a late night, this bar and nightclub takes off at 9pm and lands at 3am every Friday and Saturday. The plane seats and windows showing the “view” from the sky makes the perfect setting for having a drink or two, or three, maybe four, or ten, with the non-existent altitude helping you along the way, this bar couldn’t be much quirkier if you tried.
The Cosy Club
This restaurant bar is perfect for a coffee date in the afternoon and a cocktail engagement by night, with its easy central location just across from the food court on Highcross Street making it an easy place to stop whatever the occasion. From the entrance to the seating, the unique décor characterises the place with authenticity, adorned with colourful and rustic furnishings it is far from a sweaty, sticky and dark club room. The extensive British food menu offers brunch through to dinner, but if you don’t fancy eating, the bar is well-equipped with refined cocktails or mocktails, spirits, beers, ciders and wine. The Cosy Club is exactly what is said in the name, ideal for those quirky bar hunters who want to experience something different than the typical Leicester night out in an intimate and comfortable setting.
33 Cank Street
Named for its location, this classy cocktail bar is perfect for those with a love for Leicester history, or even for those who would love to know more, or even those who just need a big old drink. Adding to the Leicestershire cocktail bar scene, the intimate and vintage nature of the bar, accompanied with petite tables alongside 17 unique handmade cocktails make this place very busy at the weekend, so make sure to book ahead. The authentic menu centred around a historical map of the city with the variety of uniquely named drinks like the Earl Grey of De Montfort or Mowbray Martinez couldn’t be any more fitting to Leicestershire. This is one for the first dates or the 50th date, with its intimate old-fashioned, artsy environment perfect for the company of one other. With a concoction of cocktail flavours, tapas and nibbles on offer, 33 Cank Street is arguably unparalleled in its character. What you thought would be an almost impossible combination, this bar is enjoyable as well as educational. You can’t get quirkier than that.
