Adam Horton is the founder of Hortons, a modern estate agency which is now one of the fastest growing agencies in the East Midlands. Adam is 25, and grew up and lives in Leicester.

How did you get into the property industry?

At the age of about 14/15 I became really interested in business & entrepreneurship and began reading lots of autobiographies and business books. I found it interesting that the majority of the successful entrepreneurs I was reading about, have had property play a significant role in the creation of their wealth. I thought if I joined an estate agency when I left school, it would enable me to learn about the property market.

Why did you decide to start Hortons?

I felt that there should be better options for homeowners when it comes to selling their property. The traditional estate agency industry hasn’t got a great name for itself, and hasn’t kept up with the way consumer behaviour is changing. This has made way for online estate agents, who do offer a more modern alternative, but often at the cost of customer service, losing the personal touch and sound advice an experienced agent can offer. We recognised that people wanted to deal with a local expert, who is there throughout the process of moving home to guide them every step of the way. Combined with technology that makes it easier to communicate, our clients are kept fully informed and we’re here when they need us - we provide the best of both worlds.

What do Hortons do differently?

I think one of the things that makes us most different to other estate agencies is our culture. We’re a team made up of experienced agents - all with 10-15+ years experience which means that no matter where your property is, you get the guidance of your own personal estate agent who is a highly experienced professional. No call centres and no passing around between different departments or teams - just a direct line to your agent whenever you need them.

Tell us about a typical day for you

Every day is different as I’m out of the office for most of the time. I tend to get up early, around 5am most days, and I like to use the time early in the day when there are no distractions to get important tasks done. Throughout the day I could be meeting with clients, property developers or our team, and I like that it’s so varied.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love working with such talented and driven agents that want to be the best at what they do. It’s also great to know we’re playing a part in a client’s journey, helping move individuals and families onto the next stage of their life.

What are your plans for the future?

We’re currently expanding further across the East Midlands - we’re launching in Nottingham in October and we are currently recruiting in 8 other towns. Our goal over the next 3 years for us to have national coverage.

Best business advice you’ve been given?

It’s not quite advice, but understanding “you’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with” has made the biggest impact on my business.
